Davies dazzles for Canada U-17s

Davies with CanM17 vs. Jamaica

It’s been a whirlwind year for Alphonso Davies – and it’s not done yet.

The 16-year-old scored for Canada’s U-17 men’s national team in a 3-0 win over Jamaica’s U-17s on Sunday afternoon in Kingston, Jamaica. Davies found the back of the net late in the first half in what the Jamaica Observer described as a “prized moment” for the small crowd.

“Davies made a brilliant run by dispatching four defenders before beating the Jamaican goalkeeper at his near post to polish off his glorious solo in style.”

Toronto FC Academy winger Jordan Faria and Montreal Impact Academy centre back Yohan Le Bourhis also found the back of the net for Canada, while Whitecaps FC Residency players José Hernández and Jake Ruby both made their international youth debuts.

“The result was positive and we showed good attitude from the kick off,” said Canada U-17 men’s head coach Paul Stalteri. “It is another game under their belt and that was one of the objectives in coming here. The conditions away are never easy, but these are conditions that we will have to face in qualifying.”

Both Canada and Jamaica, who will meet again on Tuesday, are preparing next year’s CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship, which runs from April 21 to May 7 in Panama. From 12 nations, the top four will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 in October.
