Experienced keeper Evan Newton joined Whitecaps FC following seven seasons as a starter in the USL Championship and three years as a backup in MLS, amassing 178 starts and 56 career shutouts across all competitions prior to his arrival in Vancouver.
Newton agreed to a two-year contract through 2022, with a club option for 2023 in January 2021. He is currently on loan to USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive FC through to the end of 2022.

USL CHAMPIONSHIP
'13-'20: Newton played 42 matches and earned 12 clean sheets over two seasons with Indy Eleven from 2019 to 2020. Newton was awarded the 2018 USL Championship Golden Glove award as a member of FC Cincinnati and previously played two seasons with Sacramento Republic FC, as well as a season with both OKC Energy FC and Arizona United SC. At the time of his move to Vancouver, Newton was USL career leader in both shutouts (50) and saves (478).
MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
'11-'13: Newton played one season with Houston Dynamo after being drafted seventh overall in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft before two years with San Jose Earthquakes. Additionally, as a member of Indy Eleven in December 2020, he was loaned to New York City FC for their Concacaf Champions League quarterfinal match.

'11: During his first year in MLS, Newton was sent on loan with Tampa Bay Rowdies, making two starts in NASL action.
COLLEGE
'06-'10: Newton spent five years at Old Dominion University, where he finished as the program's all-time leader in saves (254) and shutouts (36) while guiding the Monarchs to three NCAA Championship berths. During his time in Norfolk, he was named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association Team three times, including a first-team nod as a fifth-year senior. Additionally, he was honoured twice with an NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Team selection, landing in the second team in his final year. Newton helped Old Dominion to the CAA title in 2007, posting a league-leading 11 shutouts and a 0.63 GAA en route to a CAA All-Tournament Team recognition.

'07: Newton was named USL PDL Goalkeeper of the Year after allowing only three goals in 14 games for the Hampton Roads Piranhas.

Newton attended the Edison Academic Center in Bradenton, FL. … He was a adidas ESP All-Star selection in 2005 and a three-time NSCAA/adidas Youth All-American in 2002, 2003, and 2005.
