VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC acquired experienced goalkeeper Evan Newton from Indy Eleven, the club announced on Friday. Newton has agreed to a two-year contract through 2022, with a club option for 2023, and will officially join the roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate, medical, work permit and visa.
"Evan brings a lot of North American experience to our goalkeeper pool and will provide additional veteran leadership to our young group," said Marc Dos Santos, Whitecaps FC head coach. "This year, the schedule for both domestic and international play will be extremely busy and it's important we are covered in every position. We are very pleased to welcome Evan and his family to our club."

Newton, 32, arrives in Vancouver following seven seasons as a starter in the USL Championship. Most recently, the native of Virginia Beach, Virginia played 42 matches and earned 12 clean sheets over two seasons with Indy Eleven. Newton was awarded the 2018 USL Championship Golden Glove award as a member of FC Cincinnati and previously played two seasons with Sacramento Republic FC, as well as a season with both Oklahoma City Energy FC and Arizona United SC.
In addition to his time in USL, last December Newton was loaned to New York City FC for their Concacaf Champions League quarterfinal match. The former standout at Old Dominion University played one season with Houston Dynamo after being drafted in 2011, which included a loan stint with FC Tampa Bay of the North American Soccer League, before two years with San Jose Earthquakes.
Entering his 11th year as a professional, Newton has amassed 178 starts and 56 career shutouts across all competitions.
