VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC forward Brian White has been named the MLS Player of the Matchday for his hat trick performance in the club's thrilling 4-3 victory over St. Louis CITY SC at BC Place on Matchday 23.
White recorded his second career hat trick as the 'Caps came back from a 2-0 deficit to win a match for the fourth time in their MLS era and the second time at home. The last time they came back from multiple goals down at home was in June 2013 against New England Revolution.
With his hat trick, White became the first player in the club's MLS era to record multiple hat tricks, with his first coming on October 2, 2021 in a 3-0 victory against San Jose Earthquakes at BC Place. White also equalled Whitecaps FC's MLS regular season goalscoring record at 39 goals on Saturday and is now up to eight goals in 18 appearances in MLS this year.
Saturday's match marked the ninth time White has recorded multiple goal contributions in one game during his Whitecaps FC career.
This is the second time White has received Player of the Matchday honours, having previously won the award after his hat trick against San Jose in 2021. The forward joins Camilo Sanvezzo (five times) and Kekuta Manneh (twice) as the only players in club history to win MLS Player of the Matchday multiple times. It's also the first time a Vancouver player has won the award since Ryan Gauld in Matchday 21 of 2023.
Earlier in the day, White was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 23, earning his third selection of the season.
White will look to continue his fine form as the 'Caps are set to begin a four-game road stretch this week. First up, Vancouver will look to make it back-to-back wins as they face Western Conference foes Minnesota United FC on Wednesday, July 3 at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota, with kickoff set for 5:30 p.m. PT. The 'Caps will quickly shift their focus to a Canadian clash with CF Montréal on Saturday, July 6 at Stade Saputo in Montréal, Québec. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. PT.
The Blue and White return to BC Place for their '80s Match against Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday, July 17. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT. Tickets are available at www.whitecapsfc.com/tickets.
The MLS Player of the Matchday is selected each matchday of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while an X (formerly known as Twitter) fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio, and online media.
