Big effort keeps the 'Caps at the top
LANGLEY, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite earned a huge 2-1 win against League1 BC side Unity FC at Chase Office Field this Wednesday evening. The result keeps them at the top of the table heading into their final three regular season matches.
The first half started with both squads controlling the tempo in their midfield early on in the match.
As the minutes went by, the young ‘Caps pressed on in the final third looking for options and occasions, with Sienna Gibson crossing in a corner to forward Sierra Bergen, whose header then flew just over the netting in the 32nd minute.
In the 41st minute of the match, Unity FC’s Kathryn Harvey's turn around dribble saw her drive inside the box, as her quick short pass found Sophie Crowther from close range, with her strike brushing off the netting.
With the second half kicking off, the home side had multiple rebound chances inside their area, as ‘Caps goalkeeper Leah Parsons followed up with a strong double save to keep the score blank in the 52nd minute.
As the ‘Caps defensively cleared off the opportunity, substitute Joy Kimwemwe responded by heading off on a counter attack. The winger went on to dribble past goalkeeper Hannah Miller, as her strike then found the back of the net in the 54th minute of the match.
With the half progressing, the Blue & White continued to press in their attacking third, as Anna Hauer’s short pass connected to Ashley Roberts in the 60th minute. Roberts then struck the ball into the net to extend her squad’s lead.
Unity FC responded quickly on their own as Tristan Corneil’s long range free kick chip curled into the top of the cage in the 64th minute as she cut the lead in half, as the home side pushed on later in the match.
Off a counter attack in the late stages of the game, Kimwewe found herself in the penalty area as her shot went wide of the net in the 86th minute.
With her side looking to close things down, the final whistle blew at Chase Office Field. The 'Caps now prepare for a massive top of the table home clash against Varsity FC on Sunday, July 10 at Ken Woods Field.

LANGLEY, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC BMO U-19 Academy earned a 1-0 victory against League1 BC side Unity FC at Chase Office Field this Wednesday evening.
The first half saw the ‘Caps settling into the match with a chance created by Luke Norman, as his strike rolled towards the bottom left corner, trickling past the net in the 25th minute of the match.
As the match progressed, the Blue & White would open the scoring as Deylen Vellios’s cross found Joven Mann in the box. The midfielder’s header was then thumped into the back of the net in the 38th minute of the match, giving his squad a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
