CARSON, CA – Whitecaps FC 2 wrapped up their California road trip with a 2-2 draw in regulation and 4-2 shootout loss against fellow Western Conference side Los Angeles Galaxy II on Sunday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
NOTES
- Whitecaps FC 2's shutout streak ended at 240 minutes, extending the longest such streak in the clubs MLS NEXT Pro era.
- Defender Joshué Ndakala and midfielder Malcolm Johnston scored their first professional goals.
The hosts would open the scoring in the 27th minute, as forward Alex Alcala found Aaron Bibout in the box to give Galaxy II the 1-0 advantage.
Seven minutes later, the young 'Caps would respond with a goal of their own from a corner kick. Mihail Gherasimencov whipped a left-footed ball into the path of Joshué Ndakala, who smashed in his first professional goal to tie the match at 1-1.
Both teams would go into the halftime break all tied up.
Shortly after the interval, Galaxy II would regain the lead as Bibout found a loose ball in the area and slotted his right-footed shot past WFC2 goalkeeper Max Anchor.
It wouldn’t take long for the ‘Caps to respond. Two minutes later, Antoine Coupland sent a cross into the path of Joe Hanson, who had his header parried away by Galaxy II goalkeeper Novak Micovic. Malcolm Johnston latched onto the rebound and put home the equalizer for the young ‘Caps.
Chances would continue coming for WFC2, as substitute Elage Bah whipped a ball into the box for Gloire Amanda, putting his headed effort just over the bar in the 68th minute.
Neither team was able to find a winning goal, meaning the match would be decided via a penalty shootout.
After two saves from Micovic in the shootout, Bibout buried his penatly kick attempt into the top left corner to give Galaxy II a 4-2 shootout victory.
Next up, the young 'Caps will look to bounce back as they return to Swangard Stadium on Friday, June 2 to take on Sporting Kansas City II. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT. All youth 18 and under get free admission to the match. Tickets are complimentary for Whitecaps FC MLS season ticket members, or $10 at the gate.
