HERRIMAN, UT– It was a tense match at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah as Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 held off Real Monarchs to a 1-1 regulation draw on a cool Sunday night.

The match began with possession going back and forth between the two sides, but Whitecaps FC 2 would strike first inside five minutes. Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau, captaining the team for the first time, pounced on a loose pass in the Monarchs defence and fired a first-time effort into the bottom corner to give his side the early lead.

Fleuriau Chateau almost doubled his tally 20 minutes in after getting on the end of an Aiden Fong cross. Fong, making his first professional start for WFC2, sent in a whipped cross for Fleuriau Chateau to get a head on but his effort went right into the hands of Monarchs goalkeeper Fernando Delgado.

Real Monarchs had to wait until the 40th minute to get their first real look on goal, when forward Daron Iskenderian smashed an effort from the right side of the box but it blasted just wide of the net. That would be the only chance for the Monarchs as the young ‘Caps cruised into half-time with the one-goal advantage at the break.

WFC2 goalkeeper Max Anchor was quickly called into action in the second half, having to pick up a chipped ball by his own defender to deny a dangerous opportunity for the Monarchs. The hosts started to pile the pressure on for the next quarter of an hour, forcing the 'Caps defense to keep sharp and clear danger as it presented itself.

Omar Marquez fluffed his lines in the 69th minute, skying a golden opportunity for the Monarchs to level the match from five yards out at the back post.

Eventually, the Monarchs would get their leveller, coming in at the 80th minute. Derrick Silva floated a cross towards the back post for Ilijah Paul to hammer home for the equalizer. With just minutes left in the match, Beni Redzic came closest to finding the winner, crashing a strike off the crossbar before sailing over the goal.

Tensions would boil just before the ref blew the final whistle, with two red cards being issued to Real Monarchs including to their goalkeeper Delgado. That set up a tense final penalty shoot-out between the two sides where the teams went through 10 rounds of shots from the spot before Derrick Silva put away the winning kick to give the home side the extra point.

Whitecaps FC 2 are back in action next Friday, August 2nd as they visit Sporting Kansas City II at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. PT. They then return home to host Colorado Rapids 2 on Wednesday, August 7 at Swangard Stadium, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. PT. For tickets, visit whitecapsfc.com/tickets.
