BURNABY, BC – Whitecaps FC 2 began their June home stand by recording a 4-0 win over fellow Western Conference side Real Monarchs at Swangard Stadium this Sunday evening.
The ‘Caps would open the scoring in the first half, as forward Simon Becher found himself in behind the opponent’s backline on a breakaway, but was tripped from behind by Monarchs defender Golden Mafwenta.
The referee showed Mafwenta the red card, meaning the Monarchs would play the rest of the match with 10 men.
'Caps first team midfielder Caio Alexandre would take the ensuing free kick but he saw his right-footed effort curl just over the top of the Monarchs goal.
After some quick buildup play made at the top of the box by the young 'Caps, the ball ricocheted into the path of Becher, who calmly slotted home his second goal of the season in the 29th minute.
The home side quickly doubled their lead six minutes later through wingback Elage Bah, who curled in a loose ball in the area, the fullback would score his first professional goal in the 35th minute of the match.
In first half stoppage time, Becher came close to grabbing his second of the match, as Alexandre chipped a ball into the box for the forward but he couldn't direct his effort past Monarchs goalkeeper Blake Kelly.
The second half would start with an opportunity from Real Monarchs, as a quick play led to forward John Imperato finding himself in a one-on-one situation, but WFC2 goalkeeper Isaac Boehmer responded with a strong save in the 65th minute.
The home side would stretch their lead even further, as Becher's flick pass found Jay Herdman inside the box, who chipped in the third ‘Caps goal of the match and his first professional goal.
In stoppage time, WFC2 substitute Théo Collomb created space in the corner and laid a ball back to Eric White, who crossed it into Joe Hanson to head home his second goal of the season and give the young 'Caps a 4-0 victory.
WFC2 will now shift focus to their next home match in their June home stand against Cascadia rivals Tacoma Defiance on Sunday, June 12, with kickoff set for 2 p.m. PT at Swangard Stadium. You can catch the match live on www.mlsnextpro.com.
