World Cup Qualifying: Canada advances, Adekugbe debuts, Mattocks scores again

The journey continues.

Canada are through to the fourth round of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying after a 1-1 road draw with Belize on Tuesday night, which sees them advance 4-1 on aggregate.


Will Johnson provided the scoring for Canada, while Vancouver Whitecaps FC left back Sam Adekugbe was subbed on in the 84th minute to make his senior national team debut. Whitecaps FC midfielder Russell Teibert did not feature in the match. 


Now, Canada moves on to the penultimate round of CONCACAF qualifying, joining Mexico, Honduras, and El Salvador in Group A. Each team will play the other twice, once at home and once away, with the top two advancing to the fifth and final round.


Canada is expected to kick off the fourth round at home to Honduras on November 13. The venue of the match has yet to be determined.


Mattocks continues tear with Reggae Boyz

Darren Mattocks just can’t stop scoring at the international level.


The ‘Caps striker scored in his fourth straight game for Jamaica on Tuesday night (see below), as the Reggae Boyz defeated Nicaragua 2-0 to advance 4-3 on aggregate. Mattocks opened the scoring in the 13th minute, before Jamaica added a crucial series winner in the 89th minute to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

Mattocks, who scored in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal and final, now has 12 goals in 32 career appearances with the Jamaican national team.


Jamaica will join Costa Rica, Panama, and Haiti in the fourth round.

Group A: Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Canada
Group B: Costa Rica, Panama, Haiti, Jamaica
Group C: United States, Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Guatemala


Fourth round matches will be played from November 2015 to September 2016.
