World Cup 'Caps: Steven Beitashour

Over the course of the history of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, a number of players who have played for the club at one point or another have also represented their country at the FIFA World Cup. As we approach the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, we will feature players of years’ past who made it to soccer’s pinnacle event.
STEVEN BEITASHOUR

Steven Beitashour is currently in the midst of his ninth MLS season. He was originally selected 30th overall in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by his hometown San Jose Earthquakes, coming out of San Diego State University. He played his first four seasons with the Quakes, and after his time with Whitecaps FC he has gone on to play with Toronto FC and Los Angeles FC.


For club

Beitashour played two seasons with the ‘Caps in 2014 and 2015. In that time he made 54 MLS regular season starts and recorded eight assists. He also helped the club win their first Voyageurs Cup in the 2015 Canadian Championship, and made two playoff appearances that season 2015 after missing the 2014 playoff match due to injury.


For country

As a dual American-Iranian citizen, Beitashour began representing his parents’ birth country in October of 2013. After making six appearances for Iran, he was called into the squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.


FUN FACT: Beitashour’s Iranian name is “Mehrdad”.
