Over the course of the history of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, a number of players who have played for the club at one point or another have also represented their country at the FIFA World Cup. As we approach the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, we will feature players of years’ past who made it to soccer’s pinnacle event.
PETER BEARDSLEY
One of the most talented and exciting English players of his generation, Peter Beardsley came through Vancouver on his ride to stardom. He began his career with Carlisle United in 1979, then was scouted by the Whitecaps and joined the club in 1981. From there, he went on to huge success back home, mostly with Newcastle United, Liverpool, and Everton.
For club
Beardsley played three seasons with the ‘Caps, making his mark with his quick dribbling and creative technical abilities. He scored 29 goals in those three years, while his 27 assists still rank him ninth in club history.
For country
After making his mark in the top division in England, he made his debut for the national team in 1986. He went on to make 59 appearances, scoring nine goals. That included two FIFA World Cups with the Three Lions, making the quarterfinals in 1986 and the semifinals in 1990.
FUN FACT: Beardsley was a finalist for the Professional Soccer Reporters of America (PRSA) NASL Player of the Year in 1983.
