Over the course of the history of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, a number of players who have played for the club at one point or another have also represented their country at the FIFA World Cup. As we approach the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, we will feature players of years’ past who made it to soccer’s pinnacle event.
JAMIE LOWERY
A native of Port Alberni, BC, Jamie Lowery’s soccer career was a unique journey. After graduating from playing with the University of Victoria Vikes, Lowery continued playing as an amateur with Vic West in the local Vancouver Island league. At that time he was also called up to represent Canada’s men’s national team.
He spent his entire professional playing career with Vancouver 86ers.
For club
Lowery appeared in 112 matches for the 86ers, beginning in 1987 and continuing until 1992.
For country
Canada’s 1986 FIFA World Cup roster featured two amateur players who hadn’t played professional soccer, Lowery and fellow islander George Pakos. Lowery, in fact, subbed into Canada’s opening World Cup match against France.
In total, Lowery made 20 appearances for Canada, scoring his only goal in his final international match against Mexico in the 1991 Concacaf Gold Cup.
FUN FACT: Lowery was one of three Vancouver Island players on Canada’s 1986 FIFA World Cup team, along with Victoria’s Pakos and Ian Bridge.
