Over the course of the history of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, a number of players who have played for the club at one point or another have also represented their country at the FIFA World Cup. As we approach the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, we will feature players of years’ past who made it to soccer’s pinnacle event.
EFRAÍN JUÁREZ
Effy Juárez began his career in the youth system of Pumas UNAM in his native Mexico. He then spent three years playing in the famed FC Barcelona academy before returning to play professionally with Pumas in 2008. His career has also taken him to Scotland with Celtic, Spain with Real Zaragoza, and back to Mexico with Club América and CF Monterrey.
For club
Juárez is in his first season with the ‘Caps after transferring from Monterrey in January of 2018.
For country
A proud Mexican, Juárez has made 39 appearances for his country, scoring one goal. At the youth level, he helped El Tri win the 2005 U-17 World Championship, and with the senior team he twice won the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2009 and 2011.
His greatest honour came in 2010 when he represented Mexico at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, starting matches against South Africa, France, and a Round of 16 match versus Argentina.
FUN FACT: Juárez and his wife Carlotta recently welcomed their second child on June 9, daughter Gaia Regina Juarez.
