Over the course of the history of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, a number of players who have played for the club at one point or another have also represented their country at the FIFA World Cup. As we approach the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, we will feature players of years’ past who made it to soccer’s pinnacle event.
BRUCE WILSON
Wilson was a strong and tough defender for the Vancouver Whitecaps from 1974 to 1977. The Vancouver native played a total of 11 seasons in the NASL for Vancouver, Chicago, New York, and Toronto.
For club
In five seasons for the ‘Caps, Wilson appeared in 92 matches while scoring four times. His four goals in a Vancouver uniform account for over 50 per cent of his career NASL goals.
For country
Wilson made 51 appearances over the course of 11 years for the Canadian men’s national team, including helping the team qualify for, and play in the FIFA World Cup in 1986.
FUN FACT: Wilson's post-playing career has seen him coach the University of Victoria Vikes for over three decades, leading the team to national titles in 1996, 2004, and 2011.
