PORTLAND, OR – Whitecaps FC 2 fell to a shootout loss after drawing 2-2 in regulation against Cascadia rivals Timbers2 in their inaugural MLS NEXT Pro season finale at Providence Park.
The first half saw the home side open the scoring in the 25th minute. A cross sent in by midfielder Victor Griffith found its way through to Selmir Miscic, who’s finish would find the back of the net.
As the half progressed, the young ‘Caps would push through with an opportunity of their own inside the final third. As Simon Becher sent in a short pass, the ball would connect to midfielder Giovanni Aguilar, as his strike levelled the game in the 33rd minute.
Timbers2 would regain the lead in quick fashion. Ian Shaul’s header following a cross sent in from Sawyer Jura would give his squad a 2-1 advantage in the 37th minute.
The second half started with an early opportunity created by Ali Ahmed, the wingback made a run on the left flank of the field, however Théo Collomb’s shot was then sent wide of the cage in the 50th minute of the match.
The Blue & White were given a penalty kick in the late stages of the match. Goalkeeper Justin vom Steeg would come up with the initial save on Collomb, but forward Simon Becher’s rebound attempt tied the game in the 90th minute.
As the final regulation whistle blew, the two teams headed to a shootout. Carlos Vivas would end up scoring the winning penalty in the ensuing shootout to give his team the extra point.
