VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Sunday that the club has acquired Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau from Montreal Impact in exchange for $50,000 of Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) and Vancouver's natural third-round pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft.
“For his age, for where he’s been, from a very young age what he’s had to face, we feel that the margin of progression for Maxime is so high,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Marc Dos Santos. “We see him as a goalkeeper with an incredible level of potential.”
Crépeau, 24, arrives in Vancouver following an impressive season on loan with USL side Ottawa Fury FC, where he recorded a USL single-season record of 15 clean sheets in 31 appearances.
For his efforts, the Canadian keeper was named the USL Goalkeeper of the Year and Fury’s Player of the Year, and was a member of the USL All-League First Team. Crépeau also recorded two clean sheets in four starts in the 2018 Canadian Championship with Ottawa.
A native of Greenfield Park, Quebec, Crépeau originally joined the Montreal Impact Academy in 2010 and played with the club’s U-21 team for three seasons before earning a first-team contract in March 2013. During the 2015 and 2016 seasons, Crépeau made 30 starts with the Impact’s USL side FC Montreal, and in 2017 he made three starts in MLS regular season play and four starts in the Canadian Championship with the Impact.
The Canadian international has earned two caps with Canada’s senior team and has represented the Red and White at the U-17, U-20, and U-23 levels.
Following a three-month roster freeze, MLS held a half-day trade window on Sunday from 6 to 10 a.m. PT. Clubs will once again be able to sign and trade their players following the conclusion of the MLS Expansion Draft on Tuesday.
