Each year, Whitecaps FC selects an individual making a positive impact in their community to represent the club in the MLS WORKS Community MVP contest. The chosen Community MVP is someone making a difference through general community service, or by focusing on health issues or social issues including diversity, equality and inclusion.
Whitecaps FC are proud to announce Coquitlam's Sandy Teel as the club's 2017 Community MVP! Sandy and her 15-year-old son Andrew have won a trip to the MLS All-Star Game in Chicago on August 2, as well as $1,000 to donate to the charity of their choice, Covenant House Vancouver.
But it gets better – Sandy and Andrew now have the chance to win a total of $25,000 to donate to Covenant House Vancouver! All they need to do is receive the most votes of the league's 22 Community MVP finalists. Fans can vote once every 24 hours until Wednesday, August 2 at 11 a.m. PT.

Sandy Teel is living proof that acts of kindness can change lives.
Andrew Teel spent his early childhood growing up in many different foster homes. Some of his foster experiences were very negative, but Andrew’s life changed forever when he was adopted by Sandy and her husband, Mark. Sandy has helped Andrew overcome the negative experiences of his childhood by sharing her passion for soccer and helping him find positive ways to give back to their community.
Sandy and Andrew are both big supporters of the 'Caps, as well as the club’s #BuckUp for Mental Health campaign. #BuckUp benefits Covenant House Vancouver, an organization that provides housing and support to over 1,300 homeless and at-risk youth each year.
Andrew was featured in this year's #BuckUp campaign and participated in a Whitecaps FC Car Wash in support of Covenant House with players including Russell Teibert. The entire Teel family also volunteered at the 'Caps #BuckUp match versus Atlanta United FC on June 3, helping the club raise over $84,000 for Covenant House Vancouver's mental health programs.
Sandy and Andrew have also raised funds for Covenant House Vancouver by independently organizing the Twoonies for Teens campaign.
Since starting Twoonies for Teens last December, Sandy and Andrew have raised over $49,000. They have also raised funds for Vancouver Street Soccer League, an organization that addresses the issues of homelessness, marginalization, and addiction through inclusivity and soccer.
The Teels genuinely believe that every life is valuable and recognize that Andrew easily could have been one of the homeless and at-risk youth that they are so passionate about helping. Sandy and Andrew have dedicated their lives to helping disadvantaged young people build brighter futures and Whitecaps FC are very proud to have Sandy represent the club as Community MVP.
