VANCOUVER, BC – After securing their first-ever win over LIGA MX opposition, Vancouver Whitecaps FC progressed to the Leagues Cup 2024 Round of 32 for the second consecutive season by finishing first in West Group 7. Saturday's match will mark the first-ever meeting between the 'Caps and Pumas. It'll also mark the eighth time Vancouver faces a LIGA MX side across all competitions in their MLS era.

TAME THE PUMAS: For the second consecutive season, Vancouver Whitecaps FC will play in the Leagues Cup Round of 32. The Blue and White secured their place in the next round thanks to a thrilling 3-1 victory over LIGA MX side Club Tijuana at BC Place, finishing first in the West 7 group with five points. The win was the club's first-ever victory over LIGA MX opposition, taking their record against Mexican teams in Leagues Cup competition to 1W-0L-2D. Now, the 'Caps will look to punch their ticket to the Round of 16 as they host Pumas UNAM on Wednesday at BC Place. The winner of Wednesday's clash will face either LA Galaxy or Seattle Sounders FC in the next round. Pumas finished in second in the West 1 group after defeating fellow LIGA MX side CF Monterrey in a shootout after a 1-1 draw on Saturday. The Universitarios are one of the most decorated clubs in Mexico, having won the Primera Division seven times, and the Concacaf Champions Cup three times.

FINAL STRETCH: Following their Leagues Cup campaign, the Blue and White will resume their MLS regular season on Saturday, August 24 with yet another meeting against LAFC. Having won three of their last four at home, Vancouver will play six of their remaining 10 regular season matches at BC Place. The 'Caps currently sit fifth in the Western Conference with a 11W-8L-5D record (38 points) and games in hand on several teams around them in the standings. The final stretch of the season will also see the 'Caps face Pacific FC on August 27 at BC Place in the second leg of the TELUS Canadian Championship semifinals, with the squad carrying a 1-0 advantage from the first leg on July 10.
