WEEKLY STORYLINES
CALI BOUND: Vancouver Whitecaps FC are set to travel to California for their first away match of the 2023 MLS regular season, where they'll face fellow Western Conference side San Jose Earthquakes this Saturday, March 4 at PayPal Park. The Quakes are coming off a 2-1 road loss to Atlanta United FC on opening day, conceding a pair of late goals after holding the lead for much of the match. This weekend, the 'Caps will be looking to spoil the party and claim all three points as San Jose host their home opener.
LEADING THE WAY: Despite dropping their opening match of the regular season against Real Salt Lake, the 'Caps showed their ability to wreak havoc in the final third and find themselves leading the way in some key statistics across the league. Attacking midfielder Ryan Gauld currently leads the league in key passes with seven, centre back Ranko Veselinović tallied the second-best passing accuracy (96.7%) amongst players who played the full 90 minutes in Matchday 1 and as a whole, the 'Caps sit second in the league in passes played in the opposition's half with 237.
BUSY MARCH: Saturday's clash against the Quakes will mark the beginning of a busy March stretch for the 'Caps as they play five matches in 14 days. Next Wednesday, March 8, the 'Caps will begin their 2023 Concacaf Champions League campaign at BC Place as they host Honduran side Real CD España in the first leg of the Round of 16. Then, on March 11, the team will host FC Dallas in MLS play at BC Place in the second annual Women and Girls in Sport match. On March 15, the 'Caps will play the second leg of the Round of 16 in Honduras and will conclude the busy schedule with an away clash against Los Angeles Galaxy on March 18.
