Vancouver Whitecaps FC will continue their historic journey in the inaugural Concacaf W Champions Cup on Wednesday when the 'Caps League1 BC women's squad kicks off the group stage on the road against renowned Mexican side Club América Femenil at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes in Mexico City.
Kickoff will be at 6 p.m. PT, live on Concacaf YouTube and Concacaf Go.
How they got here?
What a night it was last Thursday at Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador.
The 'Caps League1 BC women's side qualified for the Group Stage after a monumental 1-0 win over eight-time El Savadorian champions Alianza Women FC in the Preliminary Round, courtesy of a penalty kick goal from 17-year-old Coquitlam, BC native Emily Wong - the first goal in Concacaf W Champions Cup history! Of the 22 players on the roster, 16 are teenagers. 11 of those teenagers had a hand in Thursday night's victory.
Club América, meanwhile, qualified directly for the Group Stage as the best runner-up of the 2023–24 Liga MX Femenil season based on accumulated points.
Who are Club América Femenil?
Arguably the most historic and popular club in Mexico, Club América are two-time Liga MX Femenil champions, winning the 2018 Apertura and the 2023 Clausura.
In terms of their quality in Group B, it's clear to see that they will challenge for top spot after recently defeating San Diego Wave FC 2-0 in the NWSL x Liga MX Summer Cup on July 26.
The team is stacked with talent, including American-born Mexican international striker and team captain Kiana Palacios, who has 12 goals to her name for Mexico. Other key players include fellow Mexican international defender Karen Luna, and 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup winning midfielder Irene Guerrero of Spain.
