VANCOUVER, BC - Good news, Squamish soccer heads.
Your beautiful backyard will be home to a brand new Whitecaps FC mini-pitch.
As part of the MLS WORKS 20 for 20 community initiative of building 20 mini-pitches for their 20 clubs in celebration of the league's 20th season, MLS has chosen the District of Squamish as the setting of the new Whitecaps FC-themed footie field, offering children a safe place to play, while providing a soccer environment that encourages unstructured play within local communities.
The project is part of the commitment from both the league and the club to increase the accessibility of soccer, creating sustainable projects that leave a lasting legacy, and supporting local youth programs that will encourage children to live a healthy, active lifestyle. Last June, Whitecaps FC launched the Sea to Sky Academy Centre, giving the youth in the Squamish community the opportunity to develop under the official Whitecaps FC training curriculum.
MLS WORKS, adidas, U.S. Soccer Foundation, and Southern New Hampshire University are collaborating on the 20 for 20 initiative, and are in partnership with Whitecaps FC with the placement of the field.
Specific location in Squamish, BC and project timeline have yet to be determined. Stay tuned to whitecapsfc.com for more details.
