Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the New England Revolution meet for the only time this season when the clubs face off in an interconference match Saturday evening at BC Place. Whitecaps FC return home after a 3-2 Cascadia Cup loss to Seattle Sounders FC last weekend. The Revolution hit the road riding a five-game undefeated streak in league play, coming off a scoreless draw with D.C. United, and now seven games unbeaten in all competitions after having advanced in the U.S. Open Cup at midweek.

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC
Vancouver Whitecaps FC saw their three-game undefeated run come to an end, Seattle Sounders FC getting a late goal for a 3-2 come-from-behind win on Saturday evening at CenturyLink Field. Whitecaps FC sit in seventh place in the Western Conference with 16 points from 13 matches.
LAST MATCH
- Sounders FC jumped out to a lead after just nine minutes, striking on the counter. Lamar Neagle sent a weighted ball to Andy Rose as he streaked behind the Whitecaps defense and he finished inside the back post.
- Whitecaps FC hit back just one minute later. Russell Teibert and Lee Young-Pyo created space down the right, then Teibert found Camilo Sanvezzo with a well-placed cross at the back post for a wide-open header.
- The visitors took the lead in the 26th minute. This time from a free kick, Teibert swung in a ball from about 30 yards out that again found the head of Camilo, who was able to slip between two defenders and score with a dramatic diving header.
- But Seattle brought the score back to level in the 70th minute after Neagle drew a penalty after being taken down by Greg Klazura in the area. Servando Carrasco calmly stepped up and rifled his shot into the top of the net for his first MLS goal.
- The comeback was completed 11 minutes later. After a sustained run of Seattle pressure, Obafemi Martins took a clever pass from Rose at the top of the box, then laced a low cross into the six. Neagle was on the spot, beating his defender to the near post to lash home the game-winner.
- Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie made two changes to the team that came back for a 2-1 win against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. Lee Young-Pyo returned to the back four for Greg Klazura, and Nigel Reo-Coker came back into the side for the departed Alain Rochat.

- Whitecaps FC saw their three-game undefeated streak come to an end with the loss to Sounders FC that put the Seattle club atop the Cascadia Cup competition.
- “That's only the second game we've lost in the last 10 games. After the Montreal game, when we didn't win that final, we knew it was New York and Seattle coming up away from home. I think if we were told we'd get three points from that we would have taken that,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie. “Now we dust ourselves off and look forward to the next one.”
- It was also the fifth defeat away from BC Place for Whitecaps FC, in seven road matches, equaling the LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes for most away losses this season in MLS.
- “We're working hard, we've got pretty good shape generally. It did change in that game, and I made it clear why that was,” said Rennie. “I think that on the road we can pick up points, I think we've got confidence in that.”
- Camilo Sanvezzo scored both Vancouver goals in the match in Seattle. He has three goals and an assist in the last three matches; it was his third two-goal match in his three MLS seasons. Russell Teibert set up both goals with crossed services; he now leads Vancouver with three assists in league play.
- “There's lots of things to build on from this game and obviously Camilo's goals and Russell's assists. Camilo also had a fantastic free kick that was rebounded that we really had a good chance to make that 3-1. At that point it would have been hard for them to get back,” said Rennie.
- But there was an injury concern coming out of the Seattle game after center back Andy O’Brien was forced to come off just after the hour with a hamstring injury. O’Brien had been off the field for just one minute in all competitions before the substitution in Seattle.
- “He said it’s not hurting him as much as it was at the weekend, which is a good sign,” Rennie said. “It seems to be hopefully a little less of a problem than we first thought, but he’s going to get an MRI and then we should have a clearer idea on the full extent of it. Hopefully it’s not too bad.”
- There are questions of cover in the back four for the Whitecaps, with center back Brad Rusin out with a calf problem and captain Jay DeMerit out since rupturing his Achilles tendon in the opening match of the season. Vancouver also dealt Alain Rochat to D.C. United just before the Seattle game.
- “As soon as [O’Brien] got injured, I knew that would be an obvious question,” Rennie said. “We made that decision for the bigger picture. We have ideas of what we’re going to do on the back of that trade, and I think that will become clear over time, but it’s unfortunate the timing, but that’s the way it goes.”
- The club has recalled Trinidad and Tobago international Carlyle Mitchell from his loan at FC Edmonton.
- “I rate Carlyle Mitchell really highly,” Rennie said. “I think that he’s really athletic. I was speaking to the coach of Trinidad and Tobago just the other week there and he said that he was their best player in the qualifying for the Gold Cup. He said he would have him first on his team sheet above even any of the players that were playing in the [English Premier League], so that spoke very highly of Carlyle.”

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION
The New England Revolution extended their undefeated streak to five games and continued their long shutout run, reaching a scoreless draw with D.C. United on Saturday evening at Gillette Stadium. The Revolution are in sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 20 points from 14 matches.

- United goalkeeper Bill Hamid was credited with four saves for the visitors, also seeing a shot by Chris Tierney in the 67th minute bounce off the post and carom to safety.
- New England goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth was called upon to make one save in recording his fourth consecutive clean sheet, extending his shutout streak to 395 minutes.
- Revolution head coach Jay Heaps made no changes to the team that rolled to a 5-0 victory against the LA Galaxy at Gillette Stadium.

- The Revolution extended their shutout streak to 395 minutes, the longest in club history, in the scoreless draw with D.C. United, stretching their undefeated streak to five games.
- “We let (the defense) down today. They did their job and did not let up any goals and every time it is like we are playing defense against our offense. If they are up here and we are up here, then we are winning like we did last week against the Galaxy,” said striker Juan Agudelo. “But today the defense was better than us. We need to be better and I feel like we need to apologize to our defense for working so hard.”
- The Revs have now kept four straight clean sheets and haven’t conceded a goal since May 11. They lead MLS with nine shutouts this season; for goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth, it was his seventh, tying him for the leaguelead with Sporting KC’s Jimmy Nielsen.
- “Every time we step on the field we want to get the shutout, we want to keep the zero. The guys have been really, really good. The back line has been super organized like I said. The shape has been good throughout the entire season,” said Shuttleworth. “The goals we have given up, I don’t think that we were making the mistakes on those things. So as we’re going along we’re trying to fix those things and I think that’s exactly what’s happening.”
- Revolution head coach Jay Heaps ran out the same team in consecutive games for the first time this season, and kept an unchanged group in consecutive games for the first time since June 2-16, 2012.
- I think there are a lot of guys on this team that can step in and we won’t miss a beat. Like I said credit to everyone that stepped in and done well. I think we’ve made changes along the back line and we’ve still kept shutouts,” said Shuttleworth. “I think that this says a lot about the type of depth we have across the back line. Not just there, but the squad.”
- The Revolution have played to four scoreless draws this season, most of any club. Their 0.64 goals against average is best in MLS; their 1.07 goals scored per game ranks 14th in the league.
- “I think when we had our chances and had that final ball, it just wasn’t there and that’s our fault. I don’t think we made enough runs off the ball. I thought in the first half, we didn’t run enough off the ball,”said Heaps. Added Agudelo: “I think we need to be more direct. I feel like sometimes we are playing the easy ball. Sometimes we play out wide because the man is open, but maybe we need to be a little more direct and get some more chances.”
- The Revolution completed a three-game homestand with the draw, taking seven of a possible nine points in the stretch. The trip to Vancouver is the first of back-to-back games on the West Coast, and the first of five road games out of the next seven.
- “Last year, we were probably losing that game one-nil,” Shuttleworth said. “I think it's a good thing that we're disappointed that we didn't get three points. That being said, we're at home. We need to maximize our points. Dropping points here is not what we want to do.
- On Wednesday, the Revolution advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup with a 4-2 victory against the New York Red Bulls in a match played at Founders Field at Harvard University in Cambridge. Kelyn Rowe scored twice in the first half, and second-half goals from Dimitry Imbongo and Chris Tierney put the match away. The Revolution will take on D.C. United on June 26 in the quarterfinals.
