ORLANDO, FLORIDA – Vancouver Whitecaps FC defender Kendall Waston was shown an automatic red card late as Costa Rica opened their Copa América 2016 campaign with a scoreless draw versus Paraguay at Camping World Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was a physical affair as the two sides combined for five yellow cards, before the 'Caps centre back was sent off in added time for a serious foul.
Whitecaps FC midfielder Christian Bolaños came off the Costa Rican bench in the second half, playing 12 minutes and attempted to win the game in the 87th minute but his shot from long distance was stopped by Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar.
Villar and Costa Rica's Patrick Pemberton recorded the clean sheets for their respective sides.
Next up for Costa Rica is a date with host United States at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois on Tuesday, June 7. Stay tuned to whitecapsfc.com for updates.
