Five Vancouver Whitecaps FC players have been named to Canada’s preliminary 40-player roster for this summer’s Concacaf Gold Cup, Concacaf announced today.
Goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, centre backs Derek Cornelius and Doneil Henry, left back/winger Brett Levis, and midfielder Russell Teibert all made the initial list for Canada. They are joined by Whitecaps FC Academy products Sam Adekugbe, Alphonso Davies, Adam Straith, and Simon Thomas. See the full 40-player roster below.
The final 23-player rosters will be announced by Concacaf the first week of June. After the official announcement, only injury-related changes will be allowed, up until 24 hours before each team’s first match. Any injury replacements must come from the preliminary 40-player roster.
The 2019 Gold Cup will be the biggest-ever edition of the event, with more participating nations (16 up from 12 in 2017), more host countries (three, including first-time matches in Costa Rica and Jamaica), and more stadiums (17, up from 14 in 2017).
The 15th edition of the continental championship will kick off on June 15 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, with Canada and Martinique marking the start of Group A action. Canada will then face Mexico on June 19 at Broncos Stadium in Denver, Colorado and Cuba on June 23 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.
