Vancouver Whitecaps FC centre back Derek Cornelius was recognized by Concacaf on Thursday as part of the Best XI team for the group stage of the 2019 Gold Cup.
The 21-year-old has started every game so far for a Canadian side that has recorded clean sheets in two out of their three matches. He has started the last two matches alongside teammate Doneil Henry at centre back, while fellow 'Caps teammate Russell Teibert started to his left in a wingback position in the second match versus Mexico.
For his club, Cornelius has made six starts and seven appearances in his first MLS season with the ‘Caps, including one scintillating stoppage time goal to earn a road draw at Sporting Kansas City.
Also named to the Gold Cup’s group stage Best XI was fellow Canadian Jonathan David. David is tied with teammate Lucas Cavallini as top scorer in the tournament with five goals.
Canada are next in action on Saturday, taking on Haiti in the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. PT. The match will be broadcast live on TSN 4.
