The contents of a tattoo say a lot about the individual wearing it. Not only are they an expression of art, they’re an expression of a person’s character and values, which explains the rationale behind ‘Caps Ink – a series that brings you closer to your favourite Whitecaps FC stars.
One of the first things you’ll notice about David Edgar – aside from his 6-foot-4 frame, that is – is his abundance of tattoos. He has two full sleeves, as well as some art on his ribs and lower back.
They all have some sort of meaning, naturally.
But his first tattoo, which can be found on his left shoulder, is still one of the most important to him. Most of the work on Edgar’s left arm is dedicated to an old friend that passed away in a car crash back in his hometown of Kitchener, Ontario when they were 19 years old.
That includes a tattoo of praying hands with rosary beads, along with his friend’s initials and year of birth and passing, and a saying that reads: “May you always have an angel by your side.”
“His mother kind of took to that saying and it was a part of the funeral,” Edgar told whitecapsfc.com. “She’s obviously still a big part of my life.”
So too is his own family.
On his upper right arm, Edgar has a tattoo that reads: “Other things may change us but we start and end with family.” A little lower on the forearm is a tattoo in honour of his three-year-old daughter, Lila, which means “night sky” in Arabic.
“I got my artist to design a silhouette and the moon,” Edgar said. “She’s holding two separate pocket watches, one with her date of birth and one with her name and time of birth.”
There’s not much room left on his right arm, but Edgar knows exactly how he wants to fill it out. In fact, his artist back in England is already in the process of designing it.
“He’s working on a cool Maple Leaf,” Edgar said. “Anyone is proud of where they’re from and I’m no different. I’ve got a big passion for Canada Soccer as well … I’m just proud to be Canadian.”
