The contents of a tattoo say a lot about the individual wearing it. Not only are they an expression of art, they’re an expression of a person’s character and values, which explains the rationale behind ‘Caps Ink – a new series that brings you closer to your favourite Whitecaps FC stars.

Family has always been important to David Ousted.

After all, he told reporters earlier this year that part of the reason he decided to re-sign with Vancouver Whitecaps FC was because of a conversation he had with his three-year-old daughter. It's no surprise, therefore, that his tattoos revolve around his children.

One is his daughter’s handprint and name on the side of his abdomen. The other is a portrait of his twin boys and their names on his right shoulder.

“I’ve always liked tattoos,” Ousted told whitecapsfc.com. “I always wanted something that was personal and that was only for me … especially the portrait is very special.”

The portrait was taken when his boys were about eight months old – they were born in April 2014. It was just another morning, but it was a morning he never wants to forget.

“They were both sitting next to each other, laughing, and it was the best picture ever,” he said. “That’s a way for me to always remember my boys when they were very little.”

It’s easy to see that family comes first for Vancouver’s star goalkeeper.

“Always has and always will,” he said.

Whitecaps FC visit Real Salt Lake on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium (7 p.m. PT on TSN1).
