Canada drew 1-1 against Honduras in their opening game of ‘The Octagon’ in 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario on Thursday.
Honduras opened the scoring just before halftime, as DC United defender Andy Najar drew a penalty kick off a Tajon Buchanan foul.
Midfielder Alexander Lopez stepped up and buried the spot kick to give Honduras the 1-0 advantage.
After dominating the start of the second half, Canada would finally find the equalizer thanks to a Cyle Larin penalty in the 66th minute.
The Besiktas striker scored his 11th goal in 2021 for Canada, continuing his fine form from earlier in the year.
Canada continued to push on but couldn’t find the winner, claiming a point in their first match in ‘The Octagon’.
Whitecaps FC players Maxime Crepeau and Lucas Cavallini were unused substitutes during the match and will now look to help Canada out in their next match of World Cup Qualifying this Sunday, September 5 against the United States at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.
