AUSTIN, TX – Whitecaps FC 2 fell to a 1-0 loss against Western Conference side Austin FC II at Parmer Field in Austin, Texas on Friday evening.
The first half would see some back and forth build up in the midfield between the two sides, with the young 'Caps strongest opportunity coming in the 21st minute. After a corner was whipped in from defender Christian Greco-Taylor, midfielder Giovanni Aguilar had a strong look for the opener but the WFC2 captain was unable to get an effort towards an empty net as the ball rolled past him.
In the 35th minute, it was Austin FC II's turn to go on the offensive. Midfielder Alonso Ramírez’s through ball pass connected to winger CJ Fodrey, who saw his left footed shot inside the arey parried away by 'Caps first team goalkeeper Thomas Hasal.
Fast forward to the second half, the Blue and White played the rest of the match down to ten men, as Hasal was shown a red card in the 67th minute of the match. Goalkeeper Cohen Park was substituted in following the play.
Moments later, the home side opened the scoring in the 75th minute of the match, as Fodrey’s header found the back of the net following a set piece situation.
The young ‘Caps battled their way through the rest of the second half, as they looked to find the equalizer in the late stages. Aguilar’s right footed strike from outside the box was saved by goalkeeper Damian Las in the 89th minute, but the final whistle blew in Texas.
WFC2 will look to bounce back next Thursday, June 15 as they return home to Swangard Stadium to take on Real Monarchs SLC. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. PT. Tickets are complimentary for Whitecaps FC MLS season ticket members, or $10 at the gate. All youth 18 and younger get free access.
