BURNABY, BC – Whitecaps FC 2 continued their MLS NEXT Pro campaign with a 1-0 victory against Western Conference side Tacoma Defiance at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC on Sunday evening.
WFC2 had the better of the opportunities in the first half of play. In the 35th minute, forward Levonte Johnson made a run inside the box, his quick footwork was followed by a strike which was parried away by Defiance goalkeeper Andrew Thomas.
After the half time interval, the young ‘Caps got a chance on the counter attack. Midfielder Giovanni Aguilar sent a ball to Kamron Habibullah, with his strong shot from distance curling its way into the top corner of the net in the 57th minute to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
Tacoma’s Sota Kitahara delivered a free kick in the 74th minute of the match. WFC2 goalkeeper Isaac Boehmer followed up with a double save effort to keep his side in the lead.
As the match progressed, Johnson would win a ball back in the midfield. The Canadian forward sprung himself on a breakaway, but his chipped attempt went off target in the 79th minute of the match.
Up next for Whitecaps FC 2 is an away match next Thursday May 25, as the Blue & White are set to visit San Jose Earthquakes II at PayPal Park, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. PT.
