Bevan scores first goal, Marinovic steps up as Kiwis reach World Cup playoff

Myer Bevan - New Zealand

Whitecaps FC 2 striker Myer Bevan scored his first career senior international goal for New Zealand on Tuesday in a 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw with the Solomon Islands.

It was Bevan’s first start and second appearance for the Kiwis at the senior level.

And it was an important one, too, as the result clinched New Zealand’s berth in an inter-confederation playoff against the fifth-place team in CONMEBOL (currently Argentina) for a spot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The two-leg playoff will take place in November.

Bevan, 20, has two goals in nine games for WFC2 this season.

WFC2 left back Deklan Wynne and Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic also got the start for New Zealand on Tuesday. Marinovic was busy, making a number of key saves (highlights below). Both goals from the Solomon Islands came from the penalty spot.

Following a weekend off for the FIFA international break, WFC2 return to action on Wednesday night vs. Tulsa Roughnecks FC (7 p.m. PT at Langely's McLeod Athletic Park), while Whitecaps FC host Real Salt Lake on Saturday night at BC Place (7 p.m. PT on TSN2 - tickets still available).
