Canada’s dreams of reaching the top of the podium in women’s soccer will have to wait after falling 2-0 to second-ranked Germany in the semifinals of the 2016 Rio Olympics on Tuesday.
Instead, Canada will play for bronze for the second straight Olympics – an impressive feat in itself – after taking home the bronze medal in 2012. Canada, who were a perfect 4W-0L-0D heading into Tuesday’s tilt, will face host Brazil in the third-place match on Friday morning at 9 a.m. PT.
Meanwhile, Germany advances to the gold medal match against Sweden.
Melanie Behringer, who opened the scoring with a 22nd-minute penalty, and Sara Dabritz provided the scoring for Germany on Tuesday.
