As you’ve surely heard by now, Vancouver Whitecaps FC moved into the top spot in Major League Soccer on Wednesday night with a 2-0 win over Colorado Rapids.
If you’re sitting atop the league at this point in the season, you’re obviously doing something right.
But to me, what’s even more encouraging is how the ‘Caps are doing it. Just take a look at Wednesday’s match. Cristian Techera continued his red-hot form with a goal and an assist, while Octavio Rivero bagged his team-leading 10th goal of the season.
Why is that notable?
Good question. Let me tell you.
Both players are born in the 1990s. So is Kekuta Manneh, whose six goals are tied with Techera for second best on the team.
This got me thinking. How much production are the 'Caps actually getting from their youngsters in comparison to the rest of the league?
Here’s a chart that shows just that.
As you can see, the ‘Caps are second to just FC Dallas in terms of goals scored by players born in the 90s. And there’s a big drop off after them.
And we're only talking about goals here. Let's not forget that Vancouver's midfield trio of Matias Laba, Gershon Koffie, and Russell Teibert are all 90s-born as well – not to mention standout rookie Tim Parker. The list goes on.
All this certainly bodes well for the future, and apparently, the present too.
