VANCOUVER, BC – What a month.
The ‘Caps posted a 3W-1L-0D record in the month of June, which has them in sole possession of the top spot in the Western Conference and second in the MLS Supporters’ Shield race.
Here are some of the month’s highlights.
BEST GOAL
The top two candidates here came off the foot of Kekuta Manneh.
There was his individual effort vs. LA Galaxy and his cool finish vs. New York Red Bulls, which was the result of a 16-pass sequence culminating with Steven Beitashour’s pinpoint cross.
Both fine options, but we’re going with the latter. Agree or disagree?
BEST PERFORMANCE
The man of the month for Whitecaps FC was no doubt goalkeeper David Ousted.
The Great Dane turned in several spectacular performances, including his eight-save showing this past weekend vs. New England Revolution.
Oh yeah, he also saved two Bradley Wright-Phillips penalty kicks in Vancouver’s June 20 victory over New York Red Bulls, which made for one of the greatest goalkeeping performances in Whitecaps FC’s MLS history.
I think you know which one gets the nod.
BEST MOMENT
The look on Kianz Froese’s face says it all.
Froese, 19, joined the club’s Residency program in 2012 before signing with the first team late last year. And on June 20, the young Canadian scored his first MLS goal – the game-winner in Vancouver’s 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls.
After the game, an emotional Froese dedicated the goal to his ailing father on the eve of Father’s Day.
These are the types of moments that make this such a beautiful game.
THREE IN A ROW
After opening the month with a 2-1 loss to Montreal Impact, the ‘Caps have now won three straight games away from home. That gives them six road wins, a new MLS club record, and a total of 10 wins on the season.
Last year, Whitecaps FC didn’t win their 10th game until October 4. And they still finished with their highest-ever point total in MLS and qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
That speaks for itself.
STREAK BUSTERS
On June 6, the ‘Caps went into the StubHub Center and ended LA’s 29-match home-unbeaten run. And then this past weekend, they put an end to New England’s 19-match home-unbeaten streak.
And these two teams were the 2014 MLS Cup finalists.
Not a bad month’s work.
The ‘Caps conclude their season-long five-match road trip on Saturday vs. Colorado Rapids (6 p.m. PT on TSN), before returning home to face Sporting Kansas City on July 12 at BC Place.
