What a wild night.
There was a full slate of World Cup qualifying action on Tuesday – and it did not disappoint.
In CONCACAF, the U.S. was eliminated after falling 2-1 in Trinidad & Tobago and Panama made their first World Cup thanks to a controversial goal from former Whitecaps FC striker Blas Perez and late winner from Seattle Sounders FC centre back Roman Torres.
In UEFA, the Netherlands failed to qualify despite a 2-0 victory over Sweden.
And in CONMEBOL, a Lionel Messi hat-trick sealed Argentina’s qualification, while Whitecaps FC's Yordy Reyna made his first appearance for Peru since 2015 as a second-half sub in a 1-1 draw with Colombia, which kept Peru’s World Cup hopes alive and eliminated Chile from contention.
Peru will now face Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic and his New Zealand national team in an inter-confederation playoff next month.
