VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that the club has re-signed experienced defender Jordan Harvey. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Whitecaps FC defender Jordan Harvey

  • Holds Whitecaps FC MLS club records for career appearances (87), starts (78), minutes played (7,125), and goals (seven) by a defender
  • Has started 23 of Vancouver’s 24 matches and scored two goals this season
  • Voted 2013 Whitecaps FC Humanitarian of the Year

“Jordan is a great guy on and off the pitch,” said Whitecaps FC head Carl Robinson. “He brings leadership, he’s excellent with the young players, his consistency levels have been fantastic, and he has a strong understanding of the league. As we continue to move forward, it’s important we have experienced MLS players and he certainly fits into that category.”

Harvey, 30, was acquired in a trade with Philadelphia Union on July 7, 2011, for allocation money. The Mission Viejo, California, native started all 14 of his appearances that year, picking up four assists, and has been a regular fixture on the back end ever since.

“It’s an honour and privilege to remain with this organization and in the City of Vancouver, which I consider a second home,” said Harvey. “I’ve been here for almost four years and I’ve really jumped in with both feet. This just solidifies that. Every aspect of the organization has really progressed since I first arrived here. It’s become something very special and I’m grateful to be a part of what we are building.”

In his three and a half seasons with the club, Harvey has set franchise records for most appearances (87), starts (78), minutes played (7,125), and goals (seven) among Whitecaps FC defenders in MLS.

Among his tallies was the 10,000th goal in MLS history – part of a 3-1 win over Chivas USA on June 19, 2013. This season, the 5-foot-11 left back has picked up two goals an assist while starting 23 of Vancouver’s 24 matches thus far. The only ‘Caps player who has played more minutes this season is goalkeeper David Ousted.

Prior to joining Whitecaps FC, Harvey spent a season and a half with both Colorado Rapids and Philadelphia Union. With Colorado, the team who drafted him in the first round (ninth overall) of the 2006 MLS Supplemental Draft, Harvey started 42 of 45 appearances, claiming three assists.

After getting selected with Philadelphia’s first pick in the 2010 MLS Expansion Draft, Harvey then started 45 of 46 matches with the Union before being dealt to Whitecaps FC.

At the collegiate level, Harvey was a regular fixture on a University of Los Angeles, California (UCLA) side that claimed four straight Pac-10 titles during his career, from 2002-2005. UCLA also won the NCAA College Cup in 2002, Harvey’s freshman season.

Internationally, Harvey has represented the United States several times at the youth level, including appearances at both the 2003 FIFA U-20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, as well as the 2001 FIFA U-17 World Cup, where he co-captained the side in Trinidad & Tobago.
