Whitecaps FC pass in MLS Waiver Draft; four players selected

Vancouver Whitecaps FC passed with in the 10th pick in Tuesday’s MLS Waiver Draft.


A total of four players were selected, with Marcus Epps going first overall to New York Red Bulls after New York made a trade with San Jose Earthquakes to acquire the top spot. Chicago Fire came away with both Cristian Martinez and Marco Urena, while LAFC selected Ricky Lopez-Espin.


The players who were not selected are now free to sign with the team of their choice.


The Waiver Draft includes players who are not eligible for Re-Entry or Free Agency and either A) are out of contract and have not been issued a Genuine Offer or B) have not had their 2019 options exercised.


Next up on the MLS offseason calendar is Stage One of the MLS Re-Entry Process on Friday at 12 p.m. PT. Players who are eligible to be selected in the Re-Entry Draft include:


  • Players who are at least 23 years old and have a minimum of three years of MLS experience whose contract options were not exercised by their clubs. They will be available at their option salary for 2019.
  • Players who are at least 25 years old with a minimum of four years of MLS experience who are out of contract and whose club does not wish to re-sign them at their previous salary. They are available for at least their 2018 salary.
  • Free Agents that choose to participate.
