Vancouver Whitecaps FC are mourning the loss of media member and friend of the club Mario Rodrigo Valdes, who passed away earlier this week.
A regular at 'Caps matches and events, Valdes covered the club prior to the jump to Major League Soccer, working with Spanish outlets Contactico Directico, Sin Fronteras, and Net Deportes.
Valdes was also a regular presence at the club's facility at the National Soccer Development Centre at UBC, watching training and attending media sessions, as well as participating in events such as the annual VWFC Media Cup.
“Mario covered Whitecaps FC with class and professionalism for well over a decade and will be greatly missed. Last year, he found an old media credential from the Swangard days and we shared a good laugh," said Nathan Vanstone, VWFC senior manager, media relations & broadcast. "He formed relationships throughout the club and was always keen to share the stories of our Spanish-speaking players. Rest in Peace, Super Mario.”
Valdes was known for his warm personality and friendly smile. His absence at 'Caps matches will be keenly felt. To honour Valdes, his spot in the media box at BC Place will remain reserved when Whitecaps FC resume play.
A memorial service with family and friends will be organized when it is safe to do so. The club will share the information when available.
Whitecaps FC offer our sincerest condolences to Valdes’ friends and family at this time. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
