VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Wednesday that the club has loaned centre back Brendan McDonough to United Soccer League Championship club Charlotte Independence. McDonough will be on loan for the duration of the 2019 USL schedule and will be eligible to rejoin Whitecaps FC following the current 2019 MLS season.
"This is a good opportunity for Brendan to continue his development and play close to home," said Whitecaps FC head coach Marc Dos Santos. "We'll track his progress closely."
McDonough, 22, was selected 35th overall in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft in January and signed an MLS contract in March. The 6-foot-2 defender made one start with the first-team, at FC Dallas on June 26, and was an unused substitute in four matches. As a member of the Whitecaps FC Development Squad, McDonough made seven starts and scored one goal, including international trips to face competition in England and South Korea.
Charlotte Independence currently sit in 11th place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference and visit Loudoun United this Friday.
