VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Friday the club has loaned homegrown midfielder Simon Colyn to Jong PSV through June 30, 2022, with an option to buy.
“This is a great opportunity for Simon to continue his development in a very good set-up at PSV, a club he knows well,” said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC sporting director and chief executive officer. “We will continue to track his progress.”
Most recently, the native of Langley, BC finished an eight month loan spell with the youth teams of Italian Serie B club SPAL.
A dual citizen of Canada and the Netherlands, Colyn has enjoyed two previous training stints with PSV Eindhoven’s youth teams and has recently been training with the club’s U-23 side.
Jong PSV competes in the Eerste Divisie, the second tier of Dutch football, and is the reserve team of PSV Eindhoven. The side is coached by legendary Dutch striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
Colyn,19, signed with Vancouver’s first team in April 2018 after coming through the Whitecaps FC BMO Academy System. As a member of the MLS Academy, Colyn split time between the U-17 and U-19 sides, registering 25 goals in 38 starts and 44 appearances from 2017 to 2019. The midfielder developed with Langley United YSA and Surrey United SC before joining the WFC Academy in 2016.
Internationally, Colyn has represented Canada at the 2019 CONCACAF U-17 Championship, tallying a goal in four starts and five appearances throughout the tournament.
Colyn becomes the eighth Whitecaps FC player on loan, joining Damiano Pecile (Venezia FC), Derek Cornelius (Panetolikos FC), and Theo Bair (Hamarkameratene) at European sides, with Jasser Khmiri (San Antonio FC), Gianfranco Facchineri (San Diego Loyal SC) and David Egbo (Phoenix Rising FC) in the USL Championship, as well as Matteo Campagna (York United FC) in the Canadian Premier League.
