VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Tuesday that the club has loaned off-roster Homegrown centre back Matteo Campagna to Canadian Premier League (CPL) side York United FC through the end of the 2021 season.
“Matteo is a player with great upside who continues to develop,” said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC sporting director and chief executive officer. “This is his first year of professional soccer after transitioning from the academy level. He now has a great opportunity to earn minutes in a competitive environment. We’re looking forward to tracking his progress.”
Campagna, 17, joined the Whitecaps FC BMO MLS Academy in 2017 and signed an MLS Homegrown contract in April. In his three seasons with the 'Caps youth academy, Campagna made 53 appearances from U-15 to U-17 and scored one goal. He was part of the U-15 academy side that claimed the Northwest Division title in 2018. Campagna also participated in the 2018 West Ham United Football Cup with the ‘Caps U-14s and the 2019 SportChain Cup in Rotterdam with the ‘Caps U-15s.
In addition, Campagna has previously been called up to represent Canada at the 2019 CONCACAF U-15 Boys Championship, making five appearances and four starts in the tournament.
York United FC is a Canadian professional soccer club based in Toronto, Ontario. The club competes in the Canadian Premier League and plays their home matches at York Lions Stadium on the campus of York University. The side currently sits fifth in the CPL standings with a 4W-4L-4D record.
