The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge involves daring someone to dump a bucket of ice water over their head. If they don't comply, they must make a donation (of usually $100) towards fighting ALS.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a "progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord," according to the ALS Association. It is estimated that ALS is responsible for nearly two deaths per hundred thousand population annually.
