VANCOUVER, BC - The Canadian Soccer Association announced on Thursday that Vancouver Whitecaps FC Homegrown midfielders Russell Teibert and Bryce Alderson have been called up to the Canadian men’s national team for an upcoming 23-man training camp, which will take place from November 9 to 19, primarily in Orlando, Florida.
Teibert, 21, was last called into head coach Benito Floro's side during a camp in November 2013, making an appearance in a 2-0 defeat against the Czech Republic in Olomouc. Overall, the native of Niagara Falls, Ontario has earned seven caps with the Canadian senior men’s national team after making his debut in August 2012 at the age of 19-years-old. The two-time Canadian U-17 Player of the Year also started all four of his appearances with the Canadian men’s U-23 side during their qualifying campaign for the 2012 Men’s Olympic Football Tournament.
A graduate of Whitecaps FC’s Residency program, Teibert emerged into a team leader in his fourth season in MLS. During the 2014 season, Teibert set new career highs with 22 starts and 29 appearances, while also recording two assists.
Alderson, 20, got his first senior experience for the Canadian men's national team earlier this year when he participated in a May training camp in Austria. During the camp, Alderson was named to the 18-man roster for the friendly against Moldova. Another product of the Whitecaps FC Residency program, Alderson has also played for Canada at the U-17, U-20, and U-23 levels, captaining the U-17 side at the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico and twice being named Canadian U-17 Player of the Year.
This past season, Alderson made his professional debut with Whitecaps FC, starting both legs of the Amway Canadian Championship semifinal series against Toronto FC.
On November 16, the Canadian side will travel down to Panama City, Panama, where they will face Panama in their final international friendly of 2014. The two sides are set to clash on November 18 at Estadio Rommel Fernandez.
Floro is looking to build on some good performances from earlier this year – Canada has only lost one of its four friendlies in 2014, and that was a 1-0 decision against Colombia, who are currently the third-ranked team in the world, in October. Canada also registered 1-1 draws with Bulgaria and Moldova in May, and earned a 3-1 win over Jamaica in September
“It’s another important game for us because we need to continue improving our tactical play and we are going to play against a very good team that has an experienced coach,” said Floro. “It’s a very good, organized team on the pitch with a good tactical sense both in attack and defence.”
