Whitecaps FC hold Alumni Match in support of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society

Alumni Match - June 27, 2014

Last Friday, Vancouver Whitecaps FC alumni played a match against a young AC Campobasso team. We won the game 5-3, but the real winners of the day were the Greater Vancouver Food Back Society, who collected over 30,000 pounds of food that will be going to people in need within our community – over a quarter of whom are children.

The ‘Caps alumni joined the event to celebrate World Cup and the true spirit of community, while raising much-needed foods, funds and awareness for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. There were many kids on hand to watch the match from an earlier clinic before the big alumni match, so there was a lot riding on this event.

The day started off brilliantly with a soccer clinic before the match and the kids got to play in a scrimmage with Steve MacDonald and Gordon Chin, who were warming up for our big game. The young soccer players were excited to get autographs as the alumni started to show up at Britannia Field in Vancouver.

As for the game itself, things didn't start well. Campobasso showed us no mercy as they stormed out to a 2-0 lead before we recovered a little to make the score 2-1 on a Jason Jordan goal.

The second half was a different story as the alumni remembered what it was like to be on the same field and the soccer brought back memories of how good these players were in their day. I personally think the reason the game turned around in the second half was my introduction to the game, even though I only touched the ball a couple times.

A special thank you to all our Whitecaps FC alumni that joined our match, AC Campobasso for being a great opponent and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank for helping to show #OurAllOurHonour in the community.
