Jacobson, 30, has seven years of MLS experience, totaling six goals and nine assists in his 174 combined league and postseason appearances, for D.C. United, Philadelphia Union, FC Dallas, and most recently, New York City FC.
"I’m really excited to join Whitecaps FC," Jacobson said. "It’s a top class club with a great coach and a lot of young talent. Every day I’m going to show up and do whatever I can to help the team win and make the players around me better. I would also like to thank New York City FC for accommodating this move for me and my family, which allows us to move closer to home."
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound midfielder from Palo Alto, California is coming off a productive year, leading NYCFC in starts and appearances with 33 each, as well as minutes played with 2,837. Jacobson also led the team in successful passes (1,089), touches (1,770), duels won (194), and tackles (70).
“Andrew is a quality midfielder with valuable MLS experience,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson. “He’s shown in the past that he can step into a new situation and be relied on to contribute. Andrew will also be an important asset in the locker room, as he will help guide our young midfielders.”
After being selected by D.C. United with the 24th overall pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, Jacobson signed with French Ligue 1 side FC Lorient. He returned to the United States in 2009 and made his professional debut with D.C. United, before spending 2010 with Philadelphia Union, then 2011 to 2014 with FC Dallas.
Prior to seeing action for New York City FC during their inaugural season in 2015, Jacobson spent the second half of 2014 on loan in Norway. Playing for Tippeligaen side Stabæk Fotball, he started all 14 of his appearances and scored one goal.
In other competition, Jacobson has started 13 of his combined 20 appearances in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions League play.
Awarded the 2007 Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year as a senior for the University of California Golden Bears, Jacobson was also named to the United States national futsal team, playing four matches at the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup.
