VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Sunday that the club has acquired goalkeeper Zac MacMath from Colorado Rapids in exchange for midfielder Nicolás Mezquida and $100,000 of Targeted Allocation Money (TAM).
“We feel that Zac can be a great addition to our club,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Marc Dos Santos. “He’s courageous in his goal, he’s good with his feet, and he’s very hungry to win a position in MLS and prove that he can be a number one.”
MacMath, 27, joins Whitecaps FC following four seasons with Colorado Rapids and four seasons with Philadelphia Union. During his time in Colorado, MacMath earned 10 clean sheets in 41 appearances across all competitions. Notably, MacMath was named Colorado’s co-Most Valuable Player with Tim Howard in 2016, when he posted a 9W-3L-5D regular season record.
Over eight seasons in MLS, the native of St. Petersburg, Florida has earned 39 clean sheets in 152 appearances across MLS play, the U.S. Open Cup, and the Concacaf Champions League.
MacMath has represented the United States at the U-17, U-20, and U-23 levels. Off the pitch, he was named the Rapids Humanitarian of the Year for his work in the community in both 2017 and 2018.
Mezquida, a 26-year- old native of Paysandu, Uruguay, scored 17 goals and added seven assists in 122 appearances across all competitions during his five seasons with Whitecaps FC.
“We are thankful for the contributions Nico made during his five seasons in Vancouver and we wish him all the best," added Dos Santos.
Following a three-month roster freeze, MLS held a half-day trade window on Sunday from 6 to 10 a.m. PT. Clubs will once again be able to sign and trade their players following the conclusion of the MLS Expansion Draft on Tuesday.
