VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC added another promising young player to the roster on Thursday, acquiring 19-year-old Ecuadorian attacking midfielder Pedro Vite via transfer from Independiente del Valle in his home country. Vite has agreed to a contract through 2025 and will occupy an international roster spot and MLS U22 Initiative spot. He will officially join the roster pending receipt of his work permit and visa.
“Pedro is a young player who at only 19 years of age has already shown tremendous upside in the early stages of his professional career,” said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC sporting director and chief executive officer. “With his unique skills, especially his vision for the final pass, we believe that he will be a great addition to our roster. But he is a very young player, so we need to be patient with Pedro and help him to adapt to a new country and new league first.”
Whitecaps FC midfielder Pedro Vite
- Won the 2020 U-20 Copa Libertadores title with Independiente del Valle
- 12 appearances and three goals with Ecuador U-17 national team, including four appearances and one goal at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil
- Three goals and six assists in 25 combined appearances in Ecuador’s Serie A, the Supercopa Ecuador, and the Copa Libertadores
"Pedro is a player who is very good on the ball and has great vision to find the right pass,” said Marc Dos Santos, Whitecaps FC head coach. “He can play in midfield or on the wing, so he gives us more options in the team. He will need to continue to mature physically, but he has the tenacity required to succeed.”
After coming through the youth ranks at Independiente del Valle, Vite recently played his first season in Ecuador’s top division, Serie A, registering two goals and four assists in 14 appearances. He also played one match in the Supercopa Ecuador, and made 10 appearances in the Copa Libertadores, scoring one goal and registering two assists in 10 continental tournament appearances.
Prior to joining the first team, Vite helped Independiente del Valle win the 2020 U-20 Copa Libertadores, defeating River Plate in the final.
“I am very happy to be a part of this club and this team,” added Vite. “I have watched the team play, there are great players who I look forward to playing with. I can’t wait to get into it and bring joy to the supporters and fans of Vancouver Whitecaps FC.”
At the international level, Vite represented his country’s U-17 side on 12 occasions, scoring three goals. Notably, Vite started all four matches at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil, scoring against Hungary.
