VANCOUVER, BC – A berth in the Canadian Championship semifinals will be up for grabs when Vancouver Whitecaps FC host Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC on Wednesday night at BC Place (KICKOFF: 7:30 p.m. PT | TICKETS:http://ow.ly/dRy150v8mRG | BROADCAST: OneSoccer | RADIO: TSN 1040).
Here’s where things currently stand in the competition.
As you can see below, a total of 13 teams are participating in this year’s Canadian Championship, which is the largest edition to date.
The ‘Caps and Cavalry, who are currently in the Third Qualifying Round, played to a scoreless draw in the first leg in Calgary, which leaves everything to play for. Here are all the scenarios for Wednesday’s match, keeping in mind it's a two-leg aggregate series with away goals as the tiebreaker:
WHITECAPS FC ADVANCE TO SEMIFINAL WITH:
- Any win
THE SERIES WILL GO TO A PENALTY SHOOTOUT WITH:
- A 0-0 draw
Note that as of this year, there will be no extra time.
CAVALRY ADVANCE TO SEMIFINAL WITH:
- Any win
- A 1-1 draw or higher (2-2, 3-3, etc)
The winner of Wednesday’s match will face either Montreal Impact or York 9 in the two-leg tournament semifinal next month. They too are all square after a 2-2 draw in the first leg. Defending champions Toronto FC will also join the competition in the semifinal, facing either Ottawa Fury FC or Halifax Wanderers.
In addition to winning the Voyageurs Cup, the winner of the Canadian Championship will represent Canada in the 2020 Concacaf Champions League.
