VANCOUVER, BC – We know who we are.
If you’re a Vancouver Whitecaps FC fan, you’ve probably heard that line once or twice over the last few years. So what does it mean?
It’s in reference to a popular supporters’ chant that references Whitecaps FC as the “Kings of Cascadia.” The ‘Caps, of course, have won the last two editions of the Cascadia Cup, a supporters-driven competition between Vancouver, Portland, and Seattle that dates back to 2004.
The Cascadia Cup is awarded annually to the team with the best head-to-head record over their Pacific Northwest rivals in regular season matches. Whitecaps FC are the most successful club in competition history with a total of five titles to their name.
And on Saturday at BC Place, they begin their defence of the Cup with a much-anticipated derby match against Portland Timbers at BC Place (5 p.m. PT kickoff, TSN1 and TSN 1410 radio).
Victory over the Timbers in MLS action had eluded the ‘Caps over their first three years in the league. Last season, Carl Robinson and his squad finally broke through with a 4-3 road win over the Oregon outfit. But the Timbers fired back with a pair of wins, one at Providence Park and one at BC Place.
In fact, Whitecaps FC are still seeking their first home win over the Timbers in MLS. Saturday is a chance to turn the tide on the Timbers and take a first step towards another season of Cascadia Cup glory.

Think the Cascadia Cup doesn’t mean anything to the players? Think again.
