Waston named finalist for 2017 MLS Defender of the Year

Waston celebration - white - playoff game

VANCOUVER, BC – Major League Soccer announced today that Kendall Waston is one of three finalists for the 2017 MLS Defender of the Year award.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC captain is joined by Toronto FC fullback Justin Morrow and Sporting Kansas City centre back Ike Opara as the three defenders who earned the most votes in polling of current MLS players, club technical staffers, and a select group of national and regional media who consistently covered the 2017 MLS regular season.

The winner will be announced on November 9.

Waston was among the league leaders in a number of defensive categories this season, including headed clearances (first), total clearances (second), and blocks (fourth). He also contributed offensively with four goals, the second highest total among all defenders, and one assist.

This is the second time in three years Waston has been named a finalist for Defender of the Year.

The finalists for each award are listed in alphabetical order below, as well as the announcement schedule for the winner of each.

The finalists earned the most votes in polling of three voting groups:

  • Media members who consistently covered the 2017 MLS Regular Season

The AT&T Goal of the Year and MLS Save of the Year will be decided by online voting at MLSsoccer.com or the free MLS app from now through November 14.
